The Proposal

My son, Jeremy, drove over an hour from college to come home and pick up the engagement ring that he had given me for safe keeping because tonight was the big night...he was going to propose.  He only stayed long enough to tell me his plans for popping the question.  The plan was that Jeremy had told Katie he was returning the necklace that he had gotten her for Valentine's Day, to exchange it for a different necklace.  He knew that she would be expecting the necklace and would not suspect a ring at all.  I asked Jeremy where he was going to propose and he explained that he was taking her down along the river to the place where they had first kissed.  Yes, romance still reigns along the mighty Mississippi, as I imagined a modern day Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher out in the cold of February, beneath the snowflakes that were drifting down from the sky and falling gently upon the water.

As Jeremy pulled out of the driveway, I admonished him to be careful and not to drive too fast.  I knew he was anxious and, of all times, didn't want to be late to pick up his date.

Time passed, and the phone rang, it was Jeremy on his cell phone.  "Mom!" he exclaimed, "I got pulled over for speeding!"   I gave a sigh of relief because a phone call so soon after he left frightened me a little.  "But listen, Mom," he continued,  "You aren't going to believe this, but the patrolman asked me why I was in such a hurry and I told him I was on my way back to college to propose to my girlfriend.  I explained that I didn't want to be late and then I showed him the ring.  The officer looked at my license and registration and then he asked me where I went to college.   As he handed me the slip of paper, my heart sank because I knew I didn't have money for a ticket.  When I looked down and saw that it was just a warning I was so relieved.  I expressed a very grateful "thank you!"  He looked me in the eye and said, "You will slow down?"  I thanked him again and said, "Yes, sir, I will."   As the officer walked away, he seemed to pause as if he had forgotten something and then he slowly turned toward me one last time and said,
"I got engaged at that college too...I hope she says yes."

Epilogue:  Jeremy did propose and Katie did say yes.  They called this evening to share the news with me.  I asked Jeremy how Katie responded to his proposal and he said, "Katie cried."
